  • “We Can Break the Chain Ourselves”: Unfettering Women’s Voices

There are many aspects to Mosqoy that inspire me: empowering Indigenous communities to prosper economically, stimulating a self-propelling system of educational opportunity for and by Quechua youth, developing global stewards internationally for a more positive and fair globalized world—the uplifting list goes on. Yet one particular aspect has stood out to me from the very beginning. Mosqoy has always advocated for the revitalization of the Quechua textile tradition.

  • A Note from our Executive Director as she passes the torch

Dear Mosqoy friends and supporters, I find it hard to believe that I am writing to you 10 years after Mosqoy started. I remember arriving in Peru as a 20-year-old, blissfully naïve and energetic, unaware that my life could be so utterly changed by the students I met here. Many people have asked why I chose to start Mosqoy, and I often respond that it didn’t feel like a choice or a decision – I was ...

  • Brentwood Service Learning: A Day on an Andean Campo

The Socma service learning trip took Brentwood students into the home of Nohemi, one of Mosqoy’s Andean Youth Program students. With the objective both to experience a day in Nohemi’s life and to help on her family’s farm, the Brentwood group headed up to Socma, a remote community outside of Ollantaytambo, in a combi or large van. The only way to access this community is by ...

  • A Post by Brentwood’s Mrs. Beatty

We arrived in Cusco last Thursday morning around 6:30am and came straight to the hotel. We all noticed the elevation right away. It was intense, especially after walking uphill to the hotel with our bags at 10,000 feet! We had a good 3 hour nap before setting out to check out the town. We got struck pretty hard with the altitude, and took a day or so ...

  • Before the Rain Season…

It doesn’t matter where you come from – but especially if you’re from Europe or North America! – Cusco will immediately make you feel like you are in the middle of a completely different world. The mystique of this old capital city of the Inca Empire, the Inca ruins scattered around it, a bunch of alternative restaurants, hostels and associations that have so many followers here, tourist agencies which promise shamanic trips, the enchanting smell ...

  • Meaningful Connections

Time flies right passed me and I don’t even get time to blink. These past couple of months as the AYP Fellow have gone by so quickly. I can hardly believe I have been here in Peru for more that three months. I have learned so many different things about Peru and Mosqoy through my work as the AYP Fellow – I have lost track of each and every single one of them! I have ...

  • La Chocolatada!

https://vimeo.com/150427896 The holidays are a time for celebrating what you have, the year behind you, and the people in your life you are grateful for. As ex-pats living in a foreign city, we are often far away from our loved ones, but those of us here in the Andes are lucky. The sense of community is extremely strong in the Sacred Valley, and something we experience with many of our weaving communities. For this holiday season, all the students ...

  • A family away from home

Over a month ago, I embarked on what has become the journey of my life. Leaving my family and home behind, I came back to Cusco with the genuine hope of becoming a better person and perhaps making a small difference by being part of Mosqoy. At first, it was all very difficult. Adjusting to another world with different social norms, attitudes, belief systems, and ways of life proved to be a more daunting and ...
